Defensive technique

White draws

This defensive technique is essential because it allows us to recognize when we have achieved a draw and when we have not.

If the defending king stands directly in front of the pawn, the position is a draw. This is true for any pawn on any rank except the last rank.

1. Kd1 The defending king must oscillate between the two squares in front of the pawn whenever possible, and if that is not possible, it must stand directly in front of the black king (taking the opposition).

1… Kc4 2. Kd2 Kd4 3. Kd1 Ke5 4. Kd2 Ke4 5. Kd1 Ke3 The only attempt to try to break the defense.

6. Ke1 Taking the opposition, since it cannot stand directly in front of the pawn.

6… d2+ 7. Kd1 Kd3
